From the "Better late than never" department:

The wait is over!

What a crazy, crazy past couple of weeks, amirite? While trying not to be utterly devastated by the news of what’s going on in the world, I somehow managed to finish up the iOS and Android apps and they’re now ready for you, my lovely public, to download and enjoy.

Attention beta users: Your original build of the app is now expired and you may have to completely uninstall it before installing the new hotness. Contact me if you have any issues with it.

Light on features, heavy on cuteness

For this first release, all you can do with the mobile app is just set your Canary up initially, but I’ve got plans for the app so keep it around and updated. Pretty soon, you’ll be able to change settings on your Canary using the mobile app, and have better insight into what it’s up to.

A huge milestone

It may not look like much, but the Canary Setup app is a huge deal. It’s my first mobile app I’ve ever developed myself from scratch (though I have worked on existing mobile apps as part of my day-job back when I had one) and I am accordingly immensely proud of it. That doesn’t mean I’m not open to feedback though! If you have any problems with installing the app or using it to set your Canary up, check out the Canary support page which has a multitude of solutions you can try, or hit me up and I’ll do my best to help you out.

Of course, this is just one step out of an insanely great many that I have had to complete, and there’s still more to do before Canary is the wonderfully useful device that I want it to be, but this is still huge. Getting through Apple’s notoriously opaque review process alone is an achievement, let alone doing the same for the Android app in the Google Play store for an app with the same codebase.

One step closer to shipping

I know, I know, I say this all the time that I just need one more thing to get Canaries out there and into peoples’ hands, but this really is one huge step towards shipping. Those of y’all who’ve been with me on this journey from the start have been waiting over a year for this, and your wait is almost over!

Of course, for the rest of y’all, this announcement is pretty meaningless until you actually buy yourself a Canary, so you should go ahead and do that right now before all your cool neighbors snatch them all up.
