Hi! If you’re having troubles with your Canary, I’m really sorry to hear that, but remember I’ve got you, so don’t worry. We’ll figure this out.

Troubles during setup

Even though the setup process is normally super-easy, it’s possible to come upon problems from time to time. Here are some potential issues and their remedies.

The mobile app can’t find my Canary

If you’ve tried a few times and your phone just can’t seem to find your Canary, even though it appears to be working,1 make sure that you’re very near the Canary with your phone, like within a meter or a couple feet, to ensure the best and most noise-free connection possible.

While you’re moving stuff around, be sure your Canary is within range of your WiFi. If your phone can connect to your WiFi from right next to your Canary, your Canary can probably connect to it as well.

The app finds my Canary just fine, but then my Canary can’t connect to WiFi

Sometimes the problem isn’t the mobile app’s connection to the Canary, but rather the Canary’s connection to the Internet, which it needs to do its thing.

  • Get closer. This can also happen from being too far, in this case from the WiFi. Sidle up a little bit closer even if it’s just to get set up. You can put your Canary wherever you want afterwards. I’m not here to restrict you.

  • Make sure your internet connection is up. Check that your phone or computer can connect to that WiFi network and load web pages.

  • Reset your Canary to its factory settings and try again. When none of the other methods work, it’s possible you mis-entered your WiFi info and your Canary has now become confused, or that just something happened. Who knows, with these things? Check out the factory reset instructions below.

The nuclear option: Factory reset

When all else fails, it might be time to reset your Canary to its factory settings. This will trash any settings you’ve made on the Canary (like WiFi) and replace them with the original values. After a successful factory reset, you’ll be able to set up the WiFi connection on the Canary and all its settings again.

  1. Unplug your Canary.
  2. Unscrew the white or clear lid from the base, exposing the Canary’s main board.
  3. Hold down the button you see in the middle of the circuit board.
  4. While still holding the button down, plug your Canary in.
  5. Wait 10-15 seconds, then release the button. You should see your Canary restart itself. If you don’t, unplug and go back to step 3 to try again.
  6. If the reset was successful, you’ll see the Canary cycle through all its colors then flash its blue lights to indicate it needs WiFi setup. You did it!

  1. You can tell if yours is working properly and ready to connect to your phone if it has cycled through all its colors and begins flashing its blue lights alternately. ↩︎
